Section 9: The End Times
Week 4: The New Heaven and the New Earth
Day 5: The Joy We Will Experience in the New Heaven and the New Earth
What will eternal life be like? Whatever else we might say about eternal life in the new heaven and the new earth, it will be place of great joy. How could it not be if the curse has been removed, along with every trace of suffering, sin, and death? (Rev. 21:1-7). However, in of themselves, those things aren’t the primary source of joy. Our ultimate joy comes from the fact that God will dwell among us.
We’ve noted before that we are blessed to experience God’s presence even now. However, we look forward to the day when God will manifest his presence among us in an even more powerful way. That has been the hope of God’s people from the beginning. Ever since Adam and Eve were cast from God’s presence in the Garden of Eden, we have longed to go back.
That is why we look forward to Christ’s return. Theologians debate over the exact timing of certain things. And those are important debates. But wherever we land on the various issues, our ultimate hope remains the same. We look forward to the day when Christ will make everything new, and the dwelling place of God will once again be with his people. When all is said and done, that is why we say:
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
Make that your daily prayer.
