Become a Christian

Maybe you have been checking out Christianity for a while and you’re thinking, “How do I become a Christian?”  Or, maybe you’ve heard about a personal relationship with Jesus and you’re wondering how to start one.  Below is a way for you to enter into a personal relationship with Jesus.

At Park City Church, we believe that there is nothing that we can do in order to earn salvation from God.  It is a gift of God’s grace to us bought by the blood of Jesus shed on the cross.  However, in order to be saved, we cannot simply acknowledge Jesus’ sacrifice as true.  We must all personally receive the gift of the gospel into our hearts by faith, and thus, begin a personal relationship with God.

Awareness of Sin and Brokenness

The first step is to see your sin and deep need for God.  As you hear and receive the gospel, the Holy Spirit begins to open your eyes and heart to the brokenness in your life.  You begin to see your sin and realize that it separates you from God apart from Christ.

Repentance

The second step is to turn from your sin.  By repenting, or turning away, from your sin, you declare that you desire to live your life in the way that God intended.

Jesus is Lord and Savior

Thirdly, you must declare that Jesus is both Lord and Savior of your life.  You declare that He is Lord by acknowledging that He is on the throne of your life.  You declare that He is Savior by acknowledging that He alone paid the penalty for your sins.  In doing so, you also declare that apart from Christ, you are unable to save yourself.

Prayer

Finally, you invite God into your heart through prayer.  If you’re wondering what to pray, check out this sample prayer below:

God, I admit that I am sinful and broken apart from you.  I confess that I cannot save myself.  Only Christ is able to do that.  Thank you, Lord, for sacrificing your own Son to save me.  I welcome you into my heart today and ask that you would fill me with faith to follow you.  Amen.

Remember, prayer is talking with God.  It isn’t about the words you say or how eloquent it sounds; rather, it’s about the desires expressed in your heart.  Please do not feel as though you must pray this specific prayer to begin following Christ.  It is only meant to serve as a guide for you.

What we’ve described here is found in Romans 10:9-10:

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
